No one wants to share their home with pests, but keeping bugs and rodents outside is easier said than done. Here are a few tips to help you keep your Amarillo home pest-free:
- Screen and seal your windows. Without a proper screen, spiders, mosquitoes and other pests can easily crawl or fly in through an open window. Even when windows are shut, smaller pests like ants may be able to slip through if the seal around your window has become weathered. Apply fresh sealant to windows to prevent this.
- Keep your trash contained. Whether it's inside or outside, any garbage, especially food waste, is an attractant for many pests, like roaches and rodents. Cover all garbage cans with a tight lid to keep pests from getting into them. If pests have begun to raid your outdoor trash, try to keep it inside until pick-up day.
- Don't leave food out in the kitchen. From ants to roaches to rodents, most pests are drawn into homes by the smell of food. Should they find an easily accessible feast in your kitchen, they'll keep coming back for more. Never leave dirty plates on your table or in your sink overnight, as this often attracts pests. Make sure any food containers are tightly sealed and securely stored, too.
- Clean up spills quickly. When water or any other liquid spills on your floor, it becomes a beacon for thirsty pests, including ants and scorpions. When you spill a drink in your kitchen, mop it up immediately to avoid attracting pests. Be sure to fix leaking pipes promptly, too; if a leak causes wood to rot, it can attract termites to your home.
